What you NEED to know about WordPress
Some people try to take the quick route of installing WordPress and learning it’s basics, which are fine….at first. But, what happens when your client asks you to make a change that requires tinkering in the CSS stylesheet or changing the PHP code?
Starting to get the point?
A lot can (and will) go wrong with a website, especially WordPress
Hackers love to try and infiltrate WordPress and they do so every day. If you don’t have the proper skills to manage hosting, security plugins, etc. then you’re swimming in dangerous waters.
I’m not trying to scare you, but:
You need to know the facts, and that’s what Strategy For Profit is all about.
Ok, you needed a bit of tough love and maybe now you’re a web design expert, or at least you’ve learned enough to protect yourself. If you’re still scared out of your wits, worry not! I have another solution for you later on in the article.
Getting started with web design to make money
The first thing you need is paying customers
That goes without saying, but HOW do you actually get clients who are willing to pay you for web design?
Expert Tip: Don’t start off by designing websites for people, for free!
The advice that first timers often hear is to volunteer your services for free and build a web design portfolio. While that might be fine in the learning stages, do NOT do this if you have the skills and are skilled enough to build websites professionally.
Web design clients who expect work for free or a discount will probably never be good clients
Read the above statement and then read it again. Memorize it. Tape it to your dog’s collar!
This is the mistake I made when I first attempted to make money in web design, as a profession. I quickly found out that clients who try to get work done at low costs or free, will eat up your valuable time and drain the energy out of you.
A foot in the door or a kick in the butt?
If you think that you’re getting a “foot in the door” working with these kind of customers, think again. The only thing you will end up with is a foot slammed in the door and a big headache…ouch!
Your best web design clients are those who are in a position to spend other people’s money
Think about this for a moment:
You’re the marketing manager at a hospital, manufacturing facility, etc. You have been tasked with making sure that the company website looks great, gets lots of traffic, new referrals and is a valuable marketing asset for your company. But, you’re not a web designer and don’t have a clue what to do.
A professional web designer’s favorite word: BUDGET!
As the marketing manager, you have been give a budget, which is basically your ticket to write checks and pay someone else to take care of all your website marketing tasks.
You NEED to find someone who can do great web design and make you look like a star in front of the CEO.
A web design marriage made in heaven
Web designer, meet your ideal client!
This type of person and company are perfect for helping you make money in web design. Why?
They have the resources to pay you fairly and on time. You’re solving the problems of several people and they’re giving you almost 100% authority to do so.
Now, do you really want to perform discounted work for some guy who’s pinching pennies, looking over your shoulder, nitpicking every tiny detail of your web design process? Not me!
Here are some of the Jedi Master methods I employ to get clients:
A great way to make money designing websites is to browse through local businesses in a Google search. Try to narrow it down to a niche such as medical clinics or eye laser clinics, that have the budget to afford a decent website.
The next step is to go to the actual websites and notice things like the age of the website, is it responsively designed or not, are there any spelling or other errors, etc.
One tip is to look at the footer. Is there is a copyright?
If it’s outdated, chances are that the website has not been touched in a while.
Another tip is to look for the web designer’s credit and go to their website, if it still exists. If the designer’s website is a no-show, then most likely they are no longer in business.
Call (do not e-mail) the company and offer something of value.
For instance, give them a call and mention that they have some spelling errors on their website, missing images or ask if they would like some info about social media, etc.
The goal is to get the customer to mention that his or her website needs work. Often times, you will hear something like “Yes, we really need to get our website updated but the designers went out of business and we can’t find them”.
That is your invitation to offer your services and make cash by designing and hosting websites!

So, what if I have no skills as a web designer but I still want to make money from home in web design?
If you do not have the proper web design technical skills but still have an interest in web design, why not co-partner with someone who does?
- Maybe you feel more comfortable researching and calling companies with bad and outdated websites.
- Maybe client acquisition is your passion and talent, as opposed to web design.
If that’s the case, partner with a web designer or outsource the actual work.
There are many who really stand behind outsourcing but that opens a whole new can of worms. Personally, I like to see and work closely with my business associates. Yet others have a great relationship with people they outsource to on the other side of the world.
Still not sure what to do but want to make money from web design?
You can always contact me and my company will do the web design and hosting. We’ve been building websites of all kinds for clients around the world since 1996. If you want to make money and can find us clients, we will pay YOU!
